Argument Against the Alex Vause Theory

Image result for alex vause c block pictures

Now that Season 6 of Orange Is the New Black is in the record books, many theories have come out about the direction of the show and its characters.  One such theory has to do with the character of Alex Vause, about how she will cope in prison in general for the remainder of her sentence, as well as how she will cope without Piper in there with her.  The theory suggests that Alex will possibly become the new leader of C Block by being the drug kingpin.  I can understand that, as Carol had mentioned to Madison that it could be a possibility, especially with Alex starting to work for Carol in order to get Madison not to mess with Piper's remaining time.  However, I have an argument against this theory.

In my opinion, it all falls apart because Carol is dead.  Honestly, even before this is even known to the inmates, the kickball game ends without violence, with really only Madison wanting to inflict some damage.  Her teammates, and especially Alex, tell her there's no point and they should just have some fun.  Before Alex had made the deal with Carol, she spoke with Madison about backing off Piper.  By the way, I refuse to call her "Badison" because it's a dumb nickname that she thought was clever and fearsome, of which it is neither.  Madison tried to display her power towards Alex, who reminded her that Carol is the big boss anyway and that Madison is "a fucking child," which she most definitely is.

With Carol out of the picture, and the inmates in C Block without their leader, they wouldn't be interested in going to war with D Block anymore.  D Block is a different story, though!  While a war may not be happening anymore due to Barb's death, Daddy is surely going to step in, seeing as she was already the one responsible for drugs in the first place.  Also, Daddy will have Daya by her side likely as well.  Back to the Alex theory!  Madison is really the only one wanting to be at war with D Block.  I'm sure she will put her attention on Alex as it was on Piper before.  However, Alex is stronger than Piper was and she can handle herself.  I think the theory about Alex stepping up in command hinged on Carol but without Carol, there's no need for Alex to go that route to survive her remaining time.  Alex can handle Madison.  Hopefully, Madison will do something dumb enough to get herself killed early in Season 7 so we never have to deal with her again.  She is the most annoying, useless, and unnecessary character in the show's existence.

In my opinion, barring any problems from Madison, Alex will go back to the straight and narrow and try to go for that degree she had been aiming for in the first place.  The only reason Alex was stepping up was because of the favor Carol did for her in getting Madison off Piper's back.  With Carol gone, Madison loses power and isn't a threat, as if she was even one in the first place.  Not only that, Piper is out of prison so Alex has no need to worry about Piper's well being.  Alex may have been great at the drug trade and not the best human being, but she is strong and determined.  I can even see a situation where Alex may at first be perceived to be the new leader but she speaks with someone else in C Block, making a deal where Alex steps down so this other inmate can run it however she likes and Alex can fade into the background without drama.  This is akin to the story in the show Wentworth when Bea was tired of being top dog and gave the position to Kaz.

There's another thing that needs to be pointed out that actually doesn't have to do with this theory but directly affects Alex.  At the end of season 3 and into Season 4, Kubra had sent Aiden to kill Alex.  Thanks to Lolly, the assassination attempt failed.  Unfortunately, Lolly was sent to Psych after to confessing to the murder of Aiden when his body was found scattered and buried in the garden.  By the way, here's a loose end within this loose end that I'm about to get to.  Litchfield, as well as seemingly the FBI, never did find out who Aiden was and it's still not known that he was an assassin in Kubra's drug ring and not an actual guard.  Despite being hired as a guard, that has more to do with both the incompetence of the prison and ultimately the former MCC.  If they knew who he really was, I highly doubt they would have hired him.

Back to my point, the video of Piscatella went viral and by then, possibly even before, without hearing from Aiden in quite a while, Kubra must know that Alex is still alive.  Much like he did with Aiden, I suspect Kubra will try to get Alex killed somehow for testifying against him.  Hell, Kubra may not even know that Aiden is dead.  I thought we would have seen something in Season 6 but with the riot happening and then the aftermath, I can understand if he wanted to wait.  Surely, this has got to be in the back of Alex's mind as well.  Piper has nothing to worry about, on the other hand, even on the outside, as she was the one that lied under oath, claiming not to know Kubra at all.  Although, it makes you wonder what the end game is if Alex is able to thwart another attempt on her life.  The only way this ends for Alex safely is if either Kubra goes back to prison or is killed.

I'd like to see a big time jump as Season 7 progresses so we can reach current time.  I know many believe that the timeline jumped to 2018 but it did not.  The show's creator just decided to add current events into the story to make people aware of the things going on in the world.  The actual time for the show is stuck at February, 2015.  However, I think a majority of the season will consist of Taystee continuing her plea for justice, while taking a slight look at life outside prison for Piper.  Whether Season 7 ends the show or not, and with it coming out in 2019, I'd like to see perhaps the last episode do a massive time jump to 2019, and give a brief synopsis of the other inmates.  For instance, by this time, several characters' sentences will be over and we don't know if Lorna's baby will survive or not.  Another hope for Season 7 is to catch up with the inmates that were sent to the Ohio prison, or if there was another as well.  The bottom line is that I argue against the theory of Alex taking the leadership role because of Carol's death.  I'd love to know your thoughts, though!

The Timeline Did Not Jump To 2018!

Now that Season 6 of Orange Is The New Black has come out, all I see are people claiming that they the writers abandoned the timeline or that the timeline has jumped to 2018.  I don't understand how people came to that conclusion because that's simply not the case.  I think there's a misunderstanding here!  Events and movements that are current in the year 2018 have been added to the show to get people talking about them.  That doesn't mean that the show has suddenly jumped that far!  It's fiction, after all!  They just wanted to place current events into the show.  There's no way the timeline could have jumped that far and the following is why!  First, I'll start with the timeline from the beginning through Season 5 and explain how Season 6's timeline works.

The show started when Piper Chapman surrendered to Litchfield Minimum Security Prison in September of 2013 and lasted through to December of 2013 at Christmas time in Season 1.  Season 2 began in January of 2014 when Piper was transferred to a prison in Chicago, along with Alex, to testify in Kubra's trial, in which Alex walked.  The season lasts until April of 2014.  We pick up in Season 3 in May of 2014 when Alex violates parole and ends up back at Litchfield, followed by Mother's Day.  This lasts until August of 2014 with Lorna getting married to Vinnie, the inmates running to the river through a hole in the fence, and Judy King surrendering.  Season 4 picks up later that same month when many inmates are transferred to Litchfield and Piscatella is brought up from Max to take care of things.  It ends in September of 2014, now a full year that Piper has been there.  Poussey is killed and soon after, a riot ensues, leading to Season 5, still in September, and takes place over a three day period.  After the riot ends, many inmates are put on buses going to separate places while the CERT team storms the underground bunker for the remaining inmates.

Now we come to Season 6, which picks up a week after the riot and we are shown the consequences that the inmates are now faced with.  Many have been brought over to Max, while we learn that the other buses took other inmates to a prison in Ohio and possibly another one as well.  We found out in Season 5 that Lorna was officially pregnant and that she likely conceived shortly after her wedding day in August when she and Vinny were able to consummate the marriage.  Season 6 ends in February of 2015, when we learn Lorna is now 7 months pregnant and is looked to go into premature labor.  Meanwhile, Carol and Barb kill each other, Maria saves the kickball game from becoming an unnecessary massacre, Taystee is wrongfully convicted of Piscatella's murder, Sophia and Piper get out of prison, and Blanca is unfortunately handed over to ICE, to most likely get deported.

Taystee's trial brings in the Black Lives Matter movement while Blanca's story reflects deportations during the current administration.  Yes, those things are more current and weren't as talked about back in February of 2015, but they are of important cultural significance, which the creator and writers of the show wanted to address.  I believe that may be what people meant by the timeline jumping to 2018, which is does not literally do.

If we leave off with the end of Season 5's riot in September, 2014 and go from there, a lot of things wouldn't make sense if it was suddenly 2018.  First of all, Lorna would long be over pregnancy, and should the child live, the child would be well over three years old by now.  Not to mention, several inmates would be out of Litchfield by then and I doubt Taystee's trial would be that long.  Again, there is no way the time has jumped to 2018.  As for Season 7 when it comes out next year, I could see them going with a time jump to the current times as the season rolls on.  I will say this one more time.  The timeline did not jump to 2018, nor was it abandoned.  They just wanted to tie current events into the show to make political statements.  We left off in February of 2015 and that's the end of the story!

Orange Is the New Black Season 6 Thoughts

Over a year has gone be since we left off from last season of Orange Is the New Black.  The end saw the CERT team storm the prison, separate the inmates on outgoing buses, accidentally kill Piscatella, and just before the team gets into the underground pool bunker, it faded to orange.  Season 6 has now come and gone, and we have seen the consequences of the riot.  In just two days, I watched the entire season and now I'm wondering where things will go in Season 7.  In the mean time, I'm going to delve into my feelings on Season 6.  We start off with many of the inmates in Litchfield's Maximum Prison.

If I'm being honest, this was my least favorite season yet.  I don't think it was terrible by any means but there was something about it that I just didn't connect with.  Usually, I get used to new characters fairly quickly and embrace them.  Season 2 brought us Vee, Lolly, and Soso.  Season 3 introduced us to MCC,  Danny Pierson, Linda from Purchasing, a few new guards, Stella, and Judy King.  Season 4 brought us Piscatella, more new guards, and a lot more inmates, such as Ouija, Sankey, Zirconia, and Skinhead Helen, among others.  This season we were introduced to Madison, Daddy, and the Little Debbie Killers, sisters Carol and Barb.  I didn't vibe with any of these characters.  I'll break down the new characters first before I get into the events of the season.

Carol and Barb
In seasons past, Freida had mentioned that she couldn't go back to Max and we learned why when we were introduced to Carol and Barb Denning, sisters who have been there for well over 30 years.  After unsuccessfully trying to commit suicide, Freida is released into Gen Pop and walks past Carol and looks scared.  30 years prior, Carol and Barb were already in Max with Freida, serving out their sentences.  The sisters were always fighting with each other over a stupid joke, something that each claimed was their own.  A fight broke out between the two and they were separated into C and D Blocks.  Both sisters' crews went to war with each other and Freida was supposed to be there for their kickball game.  Instead, Freida chose to implicate the sisters so she could get transferred to Minimum, making big enemies of both, especially Barb, who got another 25 years added to her sentence.  Years later, Carol is running C Block and Barb is running D Block.  They're still bickering with each other over something stupid.

We find out that they were known as the Little Debbie Killers, in that they killed their little sister Debbie over petty jealousy.  In a flashback scene, we see them arguing with their parents, as well as being jealous of Debbie's accomplishments.  Together, they lock Debbie in a car and push it into a frozen lake.  We also find out that the joke each claimed as her own was neither of theirs to begin with.  They both concoct a plan in which their gangs attempt to kill each other on the reinstated kickball game, thanks to Piper, who brought it back.  Meanwhile, they meet in a closet and change into clothes resembling that of B Block, or Florida, where Freida is, in an effort to blend in when the inmates come back into the prison, and eventually kill Freida.  When they realize their plan didn't work, thanks to Piper being released and Maria convincing McCullough to change the teams, they kill each other.  As sick as it was to kill their sister, they didn't portray the scariness associated with such an act during this season.  They came off as silly to me and I was glad to see them die so I don't have to watch them anymore.

Daddy
Daddy is an inmate in D Block working under Barb.  She is known as being a drug pusher and has a control over some of the women, one of which ends up being Daya.  She ends up getting Daya hooked on drugs and they develop a relationship.  Meanwhile, Daya took a plea to endure a life sentence over her involvement in Humps' death.  However, while she did shoot him, we know his death was actually caused by Kukudio blowing into his IV, which caused a stroke and then death.  In order to cope with this, as well as getting beaten by the guards, it's easy to see why she ends up on drugs.  In flashbacks, we see Daddy was similar before prison as well, being somewhat of a pimp, as well as a drug pusher.  Under her care, one of her girls dies.  We're under the impression this happened several times.  She was okay but I just didn't connect with her character either.

Madison
Early into Season 6, we meet Madison, an inmate with a ridiculously over the top Boston accent, who harasses inmates.  Her new victim is Piper but Alex is able to intervene a few times.  She tries to come off funny and tough by naming herself "Badison" but no one respects her or takes her seriously.  She's working directly under Carol in C Block and tries to bully others.  In flashbacks, we learn that she got this way because she was bullied in school.  However, her actions show her not being a victim at all, yelling at her parents, and continuing her ways and reacting from bullying even in Military school.  One of her pranks backfires and she accidentally sets another girl on fire.  We're not sure exactly what got Madison into prison, though.  She is by far the worst character ever created on this show.  I don't want to hear that she's a good character because I'm supposed to be annoyed by her.  She was annoying, in that I didn't even want to watch her scenes.  They felt unbearable and the accent was way overdone.  She was supposed to come off as a villain but failed across the board.  Even though we all cheered when Vee got killed, she was at least a convincing villain.  If any character deserves to die or be written off this show, it's Madison for sure.

Lack of other inmates
A few episodes in, we learned that several inmates were sent to a prison in Cincinnati, OH.  We got a quick glimpse of Skinhead Helen, Oujia, Boo, and Linda.  Just after Linda's head was shaved due to a lice infection, leadership finally figured out that she was in MCC after all.  Other than the 30 seconds these characters were on screen, we didn't see many inmates.  Such notables missing from this season were Maritza, Yoga Jones, Janae, Norma, Gina, Soso, Sankey, Brandy, Allison, and several others.  I hope we see some of these others in Season 7, if only to get a little closure.  I even missed the resident Meth heads, Leanne and Angie, which I never thought I'd say.  We also didn't see some guards, nor did we get closure on Bailey's situation.  I also could have done without the game the guards played regarding the inmates.  It was sick and unnecessary!

For all its faults, we did see some positive as well.  Piper and Alex got "married," with Nicky in full Rabbi attire, which was quite amusing.  Piper did end up getting released but seemed conflicted after leaving, probably worrying about Alex.  I liked that we seem to be seeing somewhat of a redemption story for Maria.  Though she got ten extra years due to Gloria blaming her for the riot, Maria ended up taking a step forward.  She sought brief counseling in the form of religion and seemed to turn over a new leaf at the end during the almost killer kickball game.  It was also interesting to see McCullough dealing with PTSD from the riot.  Though I'm not happy about the way she got released, I was happy to see Sofia get out to see Crystal.  I also thought the relationship between Blanca and Diablo was adorable.  Suzanne bonded with Frieda and Pennsatucky as well.  Speaking of Pennsatucky, I'm so glad she came to her senses and left Donuts the rapist.  I understand why she turned herself back in, as there as a manhunt for her and if he continued to run, the consequences would no doubt be severe.

Overall, I'd give it a 6 out of 10.  Again, it wasn't horrible by any means, but it just didn't do much for me.  While I may not like it, I understand Taystee going down for Piscatella's murder, even though she didn't do it.  I also understand why it looks like Blanca is about to get deported.  They are characters we really care about and these things happening to others may not have as much impact.  It's the same reason we lost Poussey.  I still hold out hope for Taystee because there's a bunch of things that could come up.  Daya seemed to have given up, and is now addicted to drugs, some of which is her mother Aleida's fault, who has been helping Hopper smuggle them into the prison.

Justice For Taystee

When critiquing a fictional television show, one must often separate logic in order to get the most enjoyment out of it.  However, in a human being's mind, sometimes a person cannot help one self, as people are logical in nature.  With that being said, I want to discuss many of the factors involved in the death of Piscatella in order to help Taystee out should she try to appeal her murder conviction.  To be fair, we don't know exactly what the verdict was, although we do know it's bad.  At best, she will be receiving a life sentence.  Even though there is no death penalty in the State of New York, she is now in a Federal Prison, which can often overrule that.

This is my maiden blog dedicated to one of my favorite shows, Orange Is the New Black.  There are many things that occurred in Season 6, which were the aftermath of the riot that took place in Season 5.  Although the end of Season 6 saw Piper get out of Litchfield, Morello have potential problems with her pregnancy, and Blanca possibly getting deported, this blog is about the verdict of Taystee's case and how I hope in Season 7 she can at least be exonerated of murder.

There are many things that don't add up, at least in the view of myself, a member of the audience.  Because I'm a member of the audience, I know things that many of the characters do not.  The other nine people along with Taystee in that empty underground pool, which at one point contained a tied up Piscatella, saw him leave the area alive.  In fact, during the interrogation, none of them were even aware that Piscatella was dead, some of which until long after the investigations ended.  We all watched as the CERT team stormed Litchfield.  Earlier, Piscatella's death, or at least a death in general, was foreshadowed when one of the men was yelled at for almost shooting an inmate with a pepper bullet, which if shot directly at someone can kill a person.  As Piscatella made his way out of the bunker, after the CERT team filled the hall with smoke bombs, that same man accidentally shot Piscatella directly in the head and killed him. At that moment, it was implied that they would try to blame it on the inmates, which is exactly what happened early in Season 6.  Cindy and Suzanne were still hidden in the bunker after the team took everyone else away.  They watched as the team came back with an already dead Piscatella and shot him directly in the same spot as the pepper bullet, with the gun Freida had in the bunker.

Here's where my logical brain kicks in!  I know that there was a crooked coroner that the CERT team got their hands on to take care of this.  However, I think Taystee's defense lawyer was able to get an opinion of a second coroner, who stated that the bullet was shot post-mortem.  If the bullet was shot post-mortem, there is no proof that Tasytee killed him, even if her fingerprints were on the gun and she shot it after Piscatella's death.  In the vein of realism when it comes to court decisions made by the jury, often times the people of a jury can be presented with a fact like that but still come to a consensus going the way they were going to vote no matter what.  That's what it looked like here.  What drives me insane is that ballistics would be able to determine that the pepper bullet entered Piscatella's body first and was the cause of death, and had none of the inmate's fingerprints on the CERT's pepper bullet gun.  Not to mention, the trajectory of the regular bullet completely contradicts how the FBI envisioned how Taystee killed Piscatella.

With all that, I don't see how the murder can be put on Taystee.  Even if her fingerprints are on the gun, it can be proven that the pepper bullet killed Piscatella.  Plus, if he was already dead, what would be the point of shooting him again?  Yes, she did hold the gun to his head earlier, but Cindy took it from her after she broke down when deciding to to kill him.  Since it was Freida's gun in the first place, her fingerprints were on it too.  The rest of the women corroborated that they saw Taystee hold the gun to Piscatella's head, which she did.  We know Taystee will get more time because she did admit to instigating the riot, due to the death of Poussey being pretty much glossed over, as well as painting CO Bailey as of victim with Poussey's death being an accident.  Unfortunately for Taystee, Cindy testified against her, which she clearly felt tremendous guilt over.  I worry that Taystee will go after Cindy in Max due to this, screwing things up for herself just after she learns that she was acquitted of the murder.  That's similar to how heated Red was at Freida for framing her and decided to choke Freida over finally seeing her grandchildren for the first time.  Taystee is all too familiar with wanting justice, as she screwed up negotiations by refusing to agree when she found out that going after Bailey was not in MCC's jurisdiction.

Changing gears for a second, I want to also bring up Daya shooting Humps, him eventually dying, and her going away to Max for a life sentence.  Daya did shoot Humps but his death did not specifically result from the gunshot.  Sophia and the Litchfield nurse were able to keep him stable.  Humps ended up in the same medical room that contained Suzanne and Kukudio, which was ironic considering he instigated the fight between the two women.  Kukudio admitted to Suzanne that she blew air bubbles into Humps' IV, which caused him to have a stroke and later die.  I feel like forensics would be able to determine that as the cause of death.  Unfortunately, we learned that Kukudio died herself due to her injuries sustained by Suzanne after Humps instigated the fight.  With all that said, wouldn't that somewhat change what Daya was charged with?  I feel like at worst, it should be attempted murder, or even manslaughter.  Those things may not have given her a life sentence, since she technically did not murder Humps.  However, after turning herself in and getting life, it seems Daya has completely given up and has turned to drugs and weird relationship with Daddy.

Back to the topic at hand!  We, the audience, saw several of the women state that they saw Taystee with the gun to Piscatella's head but none saw her actually pull the trigger.  Another thing that bothered me is that everyone was aware of the video that went viral of Piscatella torturing the inmates.  However, the prosecutor and likely the jury decided that it was motive for Taystee to murder him, even though she was not even one of the inmates he tortured.  Yes, it was dumb for Red to lure Piscatella there, endangering herself and several other inmates.  However, Piscatella wasn't even supposed to be there.  He dressed in a CERT uniform, a team he was not a part of, and went into the prison himself without authorization.  Not only that, Caputo had suspended him before the riot even started, due to the circumstances of Poussey's death and it being under his watch.  All that should lead to questioning why Piscatella was even in the prison during the riot in the first place, even if he did end up dead.

Many people have complained about the character of Piper, stating that she's annoying, is the epitome of white privilege, and hasn't done anything redeeming that was not about herself.  In Season 7, I'd like to see Piper redeem herself in the eyes of the audience and her former fellow inmates now that she's out of prison.  While still in there, she made it clear she would write a memoir about her experience in prison, which is exactly what this show was based on.  However, I'd like to see this go even further.  Now that Piper has left Litchfield, regardless of the circumstances, she could help Caputo further with helping out Taystee for taking the rap for the murder of Piscatella.  Piper was there in the bunker and saw everything.  She saw Red let Piscatella go and watched him leave on his own accord.  She was also one of the inmates tortured by him.  Though it's understandable for Piper to worry about her now wife Alex, who still has plenty of time in Litchfield, it would be nice for Piper to help clear Taystee's name and show why the riot happened in the first place.

I read some arguments that the root of the riot taking place started when Alex killed Aiden in the greenhouse.  People have to remember that Aiden worked for Kubra and was sent to kill her for testifying against her former drug boss.  Even though Aiden mentioned he got hired by Litchfield because they would take just about anyone, he wasn't truly a guard.  During the investigation, after finding his body cut up and buried in the garden, they came to the conclusion that Lolly was to blame and they put her in Psych when she confessed.  Again, you can blame this on MCC for the lack of background checks but it started even before when Fig was in charge.  Alex had guilt so she wanted to confess later on, just after Lolly had been found to be the culprit.  When Aiden was choking Alex, Lolly walked back in the greenhouse and saved her, hitting him in the head numerous times.  We all thought he was dead right there but when Alex came back to bury him, he was still alive and she had to finish the job.  When she and Lolly came back the next morning to bury him, they saw Freida had found out, was bored, and wanted to help.  She convinced Alex and Lolly to cut up his body into six pieces and bury it across the garden.  After it was all over, investigators still couldn't figure out who Aiden was because he had several aliases, which again proves that a lack of background checks was at fault for letting him in in the first place.

Some fans claim that this chain of events led to the guards being stricter, which led to Blanca passively defying them, which led to the accidental death of Poussey, which led to the riot and its aftermath.  Again, a lot of this was probably bound to happen sooner or later.  Caputo thought that after Fig was out of the picture, things would improve but then MCC came along, which he thought was going to be a good thing, when they bought the prison and saved it from shutting down.  While MCC did make things progressively worse, it was doomed long before MCC was around.  After all, Tricia's death was due to Pornstache, locking her, a known drug addict trying to stay clean, in a closet with the drugs.  Even though Pornstache was eventually unfairly imprisoned and set up by Daya and company, he was still a piece of garbage and more than deserved what he got.  It's called Karma!  This might have been the only way to get rid of him, because he would have likely still caused problems.

I'm getting off on a tangent here but I'm just trying to point out some of the things that led to Poussey's death, which led to the riot.  All of these factors, especially the negligence of MCC and those before, should be factors in Taystee's case.  Going back to Piper maybe being an activist on the outside to help Taystee, it would be kind of cool for her to try to help out other inmates too.  She could be an advocate for Blanca to help her from deportation.  She could help Aleida find a job.  She could get really involved with many of the cases of her former fellow inmates at Litchfield and shed the persona she was known for.  She saw first hand the treatment of inmates in prison and got some unfair treatment herself, even though she did get favored at times, such as being granted Furlough.

I'm not sure if this would help but Cindy could always recant her testimony to do the right thing.  It would likely add a lot more time to her sentence and might not even do any good for Taystee at this point, but the effort would be appreciated.  Suzanne saw how it went down too but she's too unstable to take serious, unfortunately, especially when off her medication, as we saw in the beginning of Season 6.  There are just so many things to take into account that would get to the bottom of how Piscatella died and help possibly exonerate Taystee of murder.  I'm also wondering if there was even any questioning of the CERT team to begin with.  Since Caputo figured out at least one person that helped put Taystee away for life, or possibly on death row, he could investigate further and possibly convince one of them, maybe even the one that initially shot Piscatella in the first place, to admit to what actually happened.  Though what Taystee did started out as justice for Poussey, as well as the inmates in general, I hope that Season 7 leads to justice for Taystee herself.  For instigating the riot and for her original crimes that got her sent to prison, she deserves those sentences and was already trying to deal with the consequences.  However, she did not murder Piscatella.  Justice for Taystee!
